New Feature: FOOD BLOGGER UNDER COVER!
at
Hello,
This was an idea from several readers. They wanted me to go undercover and report on restaurants when I was not expected. I did this today and what I found was very distrurbing. During the past several months all my neighborhood, casual and affordable sushi hangouts have closed. I live on the Upper West Side. Lenge, Rikyu and Hunan Park are closed. I was looking for a quick bite before seeing a show at Lincoln Center. I should have stopped into Sushi A- GO- GO, but decided to try something new. I went to DAN Japanese Restaurant between 68/69th and Broadway.
The results were alarming. I had the worst sushi that I have ever tasted in my entire life. But, sadly everything was bad. I ordered a two roll sushi box which came with miso, salad and two rolls. The miso was edible. The salad was horrendous. They did not serve it with ginger dressing and the salad was filled with black pepper. It was terrible. I did not say a word. IT GETS WORSE!
The sushi: I ordered a shrimp roll with spicy sauce on the side and an Eel roll. The rice was hard. The shrimp roll was so small you could hardly see anything. It tasted like a rice roll. This was truly the worst sushi meal I have ever experienced. It tasted like it came from Food Emporium before the end of the night. It was hard, stale rice with specks of fish.
I will never eat there again.

ARTE CAFE! $25.00 or less before Tax and Tip!

My favorite dish! (3.9 out of 4 stars) A Corine's Pick! Cavatelli con Sugo Di Cinghiale braised wild boar, porcini mushrooms and chianti wine. Pollo Parmigiana with mashed potatoes. (3-4 stars) Caesar salad. (3 out of 4 stars) I am now starting a new column $25 dollars or less. In NYC, Dining is very expensive. So finding, a three course lunch or dinner is difficult to find for $20-$25 dollars a person. Arte Cafe: http://www.artecafenyc.com/html/plunch.htmlI asked the waiter what is the most popular dish on the prix fix menu. . He suggested Pollo Parmigiana served with fedelini pomodoro. It was tasty and filling. It could have had a bit more sauce. The chicken, a Southern Italian favorite was prepared in a Northern Italian way. I would give it three out of four stars. They were accomodating and allowed me to try the mashed potatoes instead of the pasta. Sadly, the potatoes arrived cold and not satisfying but they did take them back and serve them at room temperature. The salad was also three out of four stars. I choose the Caesar. It was the perfect size portion for a starter. My friend had a green salad. I tried both and preferred the Caesar. The cost for this meal before tax and tip was $13.00. I would suggest a glass of the Redwood Creek Pinot Noir for $10.00 a glass (it was 4 out of 4 stars) the total would be around $25.00, but very good value! Arte Cafe is a beautiful restaurant with a warm and comfortable feel. The atmosphere is inviting and charming. It is the perfect place for a romantic date . It has a romantic atmosphere. The food is good, inexpensive and satisfying and the staff are attentive and charming. http://www.artecafenyc.com/html/flash.htmlPros: Atmoshere, friendly service, reasonable cost. Cons: The potatoes were served cold: They did correct it when I asked for them to be served at room temperature. The dish came with pasta and sauce but they did substitute the potatoes (I was interested in another guests potatoes. Sadly, they were nothing special. My advice order the pasta. ) With wine and the other two courses the lunch would come to a bit under $26.00 a person. It was well worth it and I plan on going back soon. They also have a prix fix dinner menu for a few dollars more and a prix fix brunch menu on the weekends with unlimited bellini's and champagne for an additional $10 a person. A moderate place to take a date or a nice place to go with friends. You can also go there if you are attending the Beacon Theater as it is only a few blocks away. Photos and written by Corine Cohen Holiday Wonders is currently playing at the Beacon Theatre.

SARDI'S WINS AWARD!

New York, NY, December 18, 2007 -- The National Museum of Patriotism, a nonprofit research center for exploring the development of patriotism through educational displays and exhibits, founded in July 2004 in Atlanta, GA, presented one of its 2007 Patriotism Awards to the legendary Sardi’s Restaurant in New York City at a special ceremony at the restaurant this morning (Tuesday, Dec. 18). The award was accepted by Sean Ricketts, great grandson of Sardi’s founder Vincent Sardi, Sr. and grandson of Vincent Sardi, Jr. The award was presented to Mr. Ricketts by Nick Snider, founder of the museum which is dedicated to promoting the history of patriotism in the United States. This will be the 22nd Patriotism Award given by the Museum to individuals, organizations and corporations who have demonstrated their loyalty and allegiance to the United States through their deeds and actions. Sardi’s is the first restaurant to receive this prestigious award which is being bestowed to celebrate Sardi’s support of the American theatre and for becoming an integral part of the fabric of America ever since the restaurant opened its doors Mr. Ricketts, who now manages the family restaurant, first began working in the Sardi’s kitchen when he was just 17 years of age. “On behalf of the entire Sardi family, I am thrilled to accept this award,” he said. Both my late grandfather and great grandfather were patriotic Americans and they, too, would be excited by this tremendous honor. The National Museum of Patriotism is the only Museum of its kind in America and the Patriotism Award is the highest honor it bestows. The most recent recipient of the award was Brian Kilmead, a host on Fox Cable News’ Fox and Friends morning show. Other past recipients included Delta Airlines, U.S. Congressmen and other civilians who have demonstrated loyalty to the country through their actions. In announcing the award, Nick Snider said, “Sardi’s is a great example of having a vision and fulfilling that great American dream. Broadway would not be BROADWAY without Sardi’s.

GYPSY OF THE YEAR!
Chita Rivera! The BITCH OF AGING- SPELLING BEE! Legally Blonde- Frankenstein I just wanted to post what an incredible performance I attended today. First of all, Jackie Hoffman and Mary Testa were hilarious. They are the greatest co hosts! They kept cracking me up. The best line came from Hoffman "If you wanted someone nice you would have hired Kristin Chenoweth" They were wonderful! My favorite numbers: 1. The cast of Spelling Bee did a hilarious bit about Spring Awakening. You need to see this number! It was my favorite. 2. The cast of Frankenstein had a very funny number about not having an audience and Hunter Foster pulled out a poster at the end wondering when Roger Bart will leave Young Frankenstein. I did love this sketch. It should place in the top three! 3. Avenue Q, did a hilarious number making fun of tourists in Times Square. It was hysterical. The best part of the show was the intro with the original cast of West Side Story. The cast which included Chita Rivera got standing ovations everytime they took the stage. It was a marvelous event. ANGELS- BROADWAY SOUTH PRODUCTION IN 2008.
at
ANGELS, THE MUSICAL Announces “Broadway South” Production in 2008 Prior to New York opening New Orleans, LA, December 13, 2007 -- Louisiana (specifically New Orleans) with no active pre-Broadway tryout venue since the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, has been given new hope in becoming a major theatre development center as early as next year, when the Australian-born ANGELS, The Musical, which created a stir with its New York debut in the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF), intends to develop, rehearse and tryout the musical in 2008 in both Shreveport and New Orleans prior to a New York opening. ANGELS plans to be the first production to operate under the new recently passed Broadway South tax incentive legislation. Broadway South, modeled on the Louisiana Film Tax Incentive, is an economic development initiative designed to promote Louisiana as a culturally driven economic powerhouse. Roger Wilson, the “architect” of Broadway South scouted shows in New York to launch this initiative. ANGELS unveiled its schedule to develop the musical in Louisiana last weekend at the Hotel Monteleone in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans. Producers Marcus Cheong, Tamara Lovatt-Smith and Robert R. Blume presented highlights of the musical stage production they hope will revitalize the theatre industry in Louisiana by bringing a Broadway creative team to develop the musical in the state. A New York cast led by Kathleen Monteleone (NBC TV, Grease, You're The One that I Want) and Brian Miller (Forbidden Broadway) performed in front the crème of New Orleans society. Council members, State representatives, business and community leaders heard samples of the new musical and welcomed the production to the state. Responses from the audience included the following comments: “I think everyone who attended the impressive presentation got a glimpse of the potential positive impact Broadway South and Angels can have on New Orleans and Louisiana,” said one guest. Another member of the audience said, “Loved it and what joy it will bring to the city! I don’t know a lot about Broadway productions. But I was moved, inspired and amazed by what I saw and heard!” ………..Angels’ associate producers Roger Wilson and Frank Monteleone, both from New Orleans, hope it will pave the way for many more shows to follow.
Enchanted! Hilarious and Charming Farce!
I went to AMC, and saw Walt Disney's ENCHANTED! It was so funny and charming. It was a pleasure to see Theater stars in films for a change. It was great seeing Tonya Pinkins, and Idina Menzel in the film! Enchanted is one of my favorite new Disney films. It is a farce about Disney fairytales! This is a must see for anyone who loves Disney! The biggest winner in this film is Amy Adams who plays Giselle. Amy Adams, plays the role like a naive doll. She is incredible and believable as a Disney Princess. The film has style and a terrific score by Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken. A must see for all theater fans! 5 poision apples! This is a Corine's pick! I adore the film and it is a must see for anyone who loves farce! The best scene in the film was when Giselle calls all the vermin in NYC to help her clean. It was fabulous and hysterical.

Catch Charles Busch in DIE MOMMIE DIE! A Corine's Pick!
Photos: Carol Rosegg. Hailed by critics as “uproariously funny” (WOR Radio), “an exquisite parody” (Variety), "wicked fun" (The New Yorker), “delightfully knowing and cheerfully lewd” (Time Out New York), “hilarious” (The Record) and “irresistibly evil” (The New York Times), DIE MOMMIE DIE! will conclude its limited 16-week engagement on Sunday, January 13, 2008. A riotous comedy-thriller steeped in the glamour of 1960s Hollywood, DIE MOMMIE DIE! stars playwright Charles Busch as Angela Arden, a fallen pop diva trapped in a hateful marriage to film producer Sol Sussman. Desperate to find happiness with her younger lover, an out-of-work TV actor named Tony Parker, Angela gruesomely murders her husband with the aid of a poisoned suppository. In a plot that reflects Greek tragedy as well as Hollywood kitsch, Angela’s manipulative daughter, Edith, convinces her “emotionally disturbed” brother, Lance, that together they must avenge their father’s death … by killing their mother! Directed by longtime Busch collaborator Carl Andress, DIE MOMMIE DIE! stars Bob Ari (The Constant Wife) as Sol Sussman, Chris Hoch (Spamalot) as Tony Parker, newcomer Ashley Morris as Edith, Kristine Nielsen (Our Leading Lady) as the Sussman’s live-in domestic, Bootsie Carp, and Emmy Award nominee Van Hansis ("As the World Turns") as Lance. Produced by Daryl Roth and Bob Boyett, in association with Tim Levy and Elyse Pasquale, DIE MOMMIE DIE! runs 90 minutes with no intermission and is recommended for ages 16 and up. A MESSAGE FROM TOM VIOLA!
at
Below is a statement from Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS. The 19th Annual Gypsy of the Year Competition will be held Monday, December 17 and Tuesday, December 18 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. December 13, 2007 Dear Friends, As the fundraising for The 19th Annual GYPSY OF THE YEAR Competition comes to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the community for their truly generous, indeed heroic, efforts following the strike. Together, we have turned a time of crisis for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and those who depend upon our fundraising, into a time of good fortune and, without doubt, sincere gratitude. BC/EFA’s work is tied directly the robust artistic and commercial health of Broadway. You make BC/EFA’s work possible. The permissions, the support, the efforts on-stage, backstage and in management offices across the neighborhood allows BC/EFA a unique opportunity to fund a “safety net” of social services for all of us in the community, as well as many who may never be lucky enough to attend a Broadway or Off-Broadway show. And for that, we can never say thank you often enough. The first GYPSY OF THE YEAR Competition in 1989 raised $64,000. Total. Today, we are projecting fundraising numbers for this 19th edition that could come in at over $3 million and break all previous records. This is a monumental achievement, proving once again that all of you are among the most generous people in the world. There is no other community, no other business or industry that has joined hands in a grassroots fundraising effort as the Broadway community has with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for nearly 20 years. This theatre community has never let us down. The on-going fundraising efforts of our friends Off-Broadway, in national touring shows and theatres across the country as well as the Broadway shows not affected by the strike, kept the fundraising fire burning and BC/EFA afloat during those 19 dark days. Then as the lights of Broadway came back the entire community, without even being asked, redoubled their fundraising efforts with amazing speed and enthusiasm. It was extraordinary. By pushing The 19th GYPSY OF THE YEAR Competition from December 3 and 4 to December 17 and 18, BC/EFA was able to make up much of the fundraising opportunities that were lost to the strike, for which we are very grateful. BC/EFA sincere thanks to all in the theatre community, here on Broadway, Off-Broadway and indeed across the nation, who have taken our fundraising and grant-making efforts to heart and have welcomed these fundraising efforts into their theatres; sharing their generosity of spirit with their audiences. Together we have indeed made a difference in the lives of thousands: those in and out of “the business” who depend on the social services of The Actors’ Fund; as well as over 400 food banks, health clinics and AIDS and family service organizations across the country who benefit from your generous fundraising efforts on behalf of BC/EFA. Give yourselves a standing ovation. With great appreciation, Tom Viola Executive Director www.broadwaycares.org

I saw " IS HE DEAD?" tonight. If you can afford one show the entire season, I would tell you to buy tickets to this one. I have never laughed harder at a play. (Vampire Lesbians of Sodom was a close tie) but this show blew me away. Fun. Laughs. GOOD TIMES!!!! What I loved about this play: It is a very funny and entertaining farce. If you enjoy over the top farce like David Lindsay Abaire's "Fuddy Meers" and Charles Busch's "Vampire Lesbians Of Sodom" you will also adore, Mark Twain's "IS HE DEAD?" David Pittu, plays many roles and stands out in each of them from the Butler to the funny art buyers, he steals most of the show. Actually, every actor and actress in this show are brilliant in all the scenes and work together to make it a funny hit. If you adore good acting and a funny farce you need to see "IS HE DEAD?" Be warned. You might die from laughing. Bring kleenex, I needed it for the tears running down my happy face! Norbert Leo Butz should win many awards this season! I AM STILL LAUGHING THINKING ABOUT THIS SHOW. I sat in row B, CENTER AISLE, and found it to be the best seat in the theater. You really need to be close to see all of the actors facial expressions to truly appreciate this show. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I plan on seeing it again next week.
