The Greatest Band of ALL TIME Will Be In New York TWICE!

Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at

Who is this? Ever hear of a band named SQUEEZE?
Do you remember these great hits?
Tempted by The Fruit of Another? Black Coffee in Bed? Pulling Mussels from a shell?
NO? Do not pass go and do not collect $200.

I am TEMPTED to buy tickets to each and every concert on this tour. I will drink my coffee BLACK and will have a few mussels to help me out.

They've returned. Those cool cats!

(This would be the greatest gift anyone could ever buy me in case anyone ever wondered what I would want to see. This would be the show of the year)

This will be the conclusion of my photo coverage of the Drama Desk Awards. It was a great event!

CULINARY CORNER UNDER COVER REPORT.

at
This time I was just entertaining a client and decided to post about the wonderful experience. The staff did not know I was press and no they did not wait on me the same way they usually do but the food was great.
Where did I dine?
Nobu 57. We had the 45.00 price bento box. It had the cod with miso (A FAVORITE) and the Rock Shrimp Tempura. Both were excellent. It also came with a sashimi salad appetizer and two pieces of the chefs choice sushi. The sushi was nothing special (In fact Raku is better at half the price) but it was fresh.

If you are looking to impress a client Nobu is the place to go.
The Rock shrimp portion was on the small side but it was the best thing in the box. The Cod was also scrumptious but the portion was on the skimpy side for a $45.00 price tag.

I enjoyed the company more than the food.

2007 Tonys

at

As an avid passionate theater goer I was sad to hear that "Legally Blonde" was not being allowed to perform a musical number at this years Tonys. I personally think the show will appeal to the tourist audience that the Tonys are trying to attract.
Maybe they should call in Kristin Chenoweth and Taco.

Some thoughts about this years event. The show was fantastic this year. We did not have any sound issues and the talent was incredible. My favorite number was with Taco and Kristin doing "Legally Blind" I was really tickled pink by that number.
Another highpoint was Kristin Chenoweth's staunch costume of the day in her Little Little Eddie costume. Great writing this year.

Mother Load

millennium."
--Fox 5 News

"Like Annie Hall wearing a nursing bra. Fluidly
directed...endearing...impossible to dislike!"

motherhood should be
required viewing for the overachiever in all of us!"

MOTHER LOAD EXTENDS ITS PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

NEW YORK, NY-MAY 17, 2007: HYDE PARK & LAFAYETTE and BRIAN LIEBMAN are
pleased to announce that they are extending the performance schedule of the
Off-Broadway show MOTHER LOAD. The one-woman show, written and performed by
Amy Wilson and directed by Julie Kramer, opened on Friday May 4 at 8 p.m. at
Off-Broadway¹s Sage Theater (711 7th Avenue at 47th/48th St) and has
continuously played to sold-out audiences. The show will now close on June
22nd.

In a world where a toddler's birthday party must be catered, a stroller
costs eight hundred dollars, and nursery school applications require
thoughtful essay writing, how can a mom keep her perspective? From prenatal
yoga to preschool interviews, actress and writer Wilson struggles to throw
off the "Mother Load" of unrealistic expectations, ignore the competitive
"sanctimommies" lurking in every playgroup, and somehow find the time to
enjoy her kids.

Any parent who has fed their kids dinosaur chicken nuggets three times this
week will identify with Amy's guilt, and fellow perfectionists will cheer as
she frees herself from it. You'll love MOTHER LOAD whether you are a
mother or just have one.

Tickets to MOTHER LOAD are $45 and are available online at
www.ticketcentral.com or by calling 212-279-4200. Tickets may also be
purchased in person at the Ticket Central Box Office, located at 416 W. 42nd
Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues.

MOTHER LOAD runs now thru June 22, with performances TuesdaySaturday at 8
p.m. and a Moms Matinee Wednesdays at 11 a.m. For more information on
MOTHER LOAD-- photos, biographies, video and more-- please visit

"No Exit"

Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at

EXISTENTIALIST PLAY FOLLOWED BY "PARIS CAFÉ" FEATURING SONGS OF JULIETTE GRECO

Postwar Paris comes to life in a unique double bill pairing Jean-Paul Sartre's "No Exit" with a new evening of songs associated with the Left Bank bohemian icon Juliette Gréco. "No Exit" (in a brand new American translation by Nicholas Wolfson and Richmond Shepard) and "Paris Café" run in tandem from June 12 through June 24 at The Richmond Shepard Theatre, 309 East 26th Street.

Both shows star the German-born actress and singer Micaela Leon, who in eight months in New York, has gained notoriety for her lavishly praised solo cabaret performances that have earned her 2007 Nightlife and MAC award nominations. Livelyarts.com calls Leon "a true Diva, with charm, exuberance and stunning beauty. She is quite moving, quite funny, a genuine superstar." Gay City News calls her "a dazzlingly virtuosic talent." Pronouncing her "fun to watch whether oozing sex, irony or is simply haunting," Wolf Entertainment Guides claims she has "an international aura that could play virtually anywhere in the world."

In "No Exit" a cowardly army deserter, narcissistic society woman and conniving lesbian are detained in a room where they learn they will remain for eternity. First performed in occupied Paris in May 1944, "No Exit" unleashes one of the most startling concepts of 20th century literature and philosophy, spoken in its waning moments: "hell is other people."

Gréco as a theatrical companion to Sartre is a logical choice: the dangerously sensual singer, a friend and confidante of numerous Left Bank writers and artists, was an oracle of postwar angst and ennui. Sartre described the singer's voice as "encompassing millions of poems."

Directed by Shepard, "No Exit" also features Christelle Cervelle, Joe Correa and Nicholas Wolfson.

"No Exit" with " Paris Café" performs 12 times from June 12 through June 24. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 3pm.

Wine will be served during "Paris Café." Tickets are $25 (includes one drink). For reservations call 212/684-2690. The Richmond Shepard Theatre, 309 East 26th, is just east of 2nd Avenue.

THE HIT BROADWAY MUSICAL

NOMINATED FOR

10 TONY AWARDS

INCLUDING

BEST MUSICAL

& BEST LEADING ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL

CHRISTINE EBERSOLE

The hit Broadway musical GREY GARDENS has been nominated for 10 2007 Tony Awards, include Best Musical. The acclaimed production starring Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole and Tony Award nominee Mary Louise Wilson earned nominations in the following 10 categories:

· Best Musical

· Best Leading Actress in a Musical – Christine Ebersole

· Best Featured Actress in a Musical – Mary Louise Wilson

· Best Book of a Musical – author Doug Wright

· Best Original Score – composer Scott Frankel & lyricist Michael Korie

· Best Director of a Musical – Michael Greif

· Best Scenic Design – Allen Moyer

· Best Costume Design – William Ivey Long

· Best Lighting Design – Peter Kaczorowski

· Best Orchestrations – Bruce Coughlin

Nominated for her dual performance as Edith Bouvier Beale (in Act One) and “Little” Edie Beale (in Act Two), this is Ms. Ebersole’s third Tony nomination. She previously won the Tony Award as Best Leading Actress in a Musical for 42nd Street (2001), and was also nominated as Best Featured Actress in a Play for Dinner at Eight (2003).

Nominated for her performance as Edith Bouvier Beale, this is Ms. Wilson’s second Tony nomination. She was previously nominated as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for the revival of Cabaret (1998).

This is Mr. Wright’s second Tony nomination. He previously won for Best Play for I Am My Own Wife (2004). Like I Am My Own Wife, GREY GARDENS had its World Premiere at New York's acclaimed Off-Broadway theater company Playwrights Horizons.

This is the first nomination for both Mr. Frankel and Mr. Korie, for whom GREY GARDENS is their Broadway debut.

This is Mr. Greif’s second Tony nomination. He was previously nominated as Best Director of a Musical for Rent (1996).

This is Mr. Moyer’s first Tony nomination.

This is Mr. Ivey Long’s eleventh Tony nomination. He’s won the Tony Award for Best Costumes four times: for Nine (1982), Crazy For You (1992), The Producers (2001) and Hairspray (2003). His 6 additional nominations were for Lend Me a Tenor (1989), Chicago (1997), Cabaret (1998), The Music Man (2000), A Streetcar Named Desire (2005) and La Cage aux Folles (2005).

This is Mr. Kaczorowski’s third Tony nomination. He previously won the Tony for Best Lighting for The Producers (2001) and was also nominated for Kiss Me, Kate (2000)

This is Mr. Coughlin’s third Tony nomination. He previously won the Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for The Light in the Piazza (2005) and was also nominated for Urinetown (2002).

The Tony nominations cap the production’s two-season span of earning Theater award nominations since opening Off-Broadway last spring at Playwrights Horizons. Unlike most productions that are eligible for all Theater awards in one season, GREY GARDENS has been eligible over the course of two. The World Premiere production at Playwrights Horizons during the 2005-2006 Theater Season yielded nominations and wins from the organizations that consider both Broadway and Off-Broadway: Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Obies, New York Drama Critics Circle and The Drama League, among many other specialty awards. As the Tony Awards only recognize excellence on Broadway, the musical was ineligible for Tony Awards until it moved to Broadway last Fall during the 2006-2007 Theater Season.

For her acclaimed dual performance as Edith Beale and “Little” Edie Beale, leading lady Christine Ebersole swept the 2006 Spring Theater awards, winning a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, an Obie, a special citation from the New York Drama Critics Circle and the Drama League’s 2006 Distinguished Performance of the Year Award. In addition to the awards bestowed on Ms. Ebersole, the musical’s many honors include: the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical; both a Drama-League Award for Distinguished Performance and the Actors Equity Foundation’s Richard Seff Award to Mary Louise Wilson for her performance; a 2006 Richard Rodgers Production Award, administered by the American Academy of Arts and Letters; being named one of Best Plays’ “Ten Best” of the 2005-2006 season (the only musical cited); The ASCAP Foundation’s Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award for composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie; The Frederick Loewe Award for Dramatic Composition for Mr. Frankel and an Obie Award for set designer Allen Moyer. The musical was also proclaimed “Best Musical of the Year” by Entertainment Weekly and USA Today and the “#1 Show of the Year” by Time Magazine.

BACKGROUND ON GREY GARDENS

Following a sold-out world premiere in Spring 2006 at Playwrights Horizons, the new musical GREY GARDENS opened on Broadway on Thursday, November 2 at The Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street) to rave reviews, lead by Ben Brantley in The New York Times, who called it “An experience no passionate theatergoer should miss!” Starring Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole and Tony Award nominee Mary Lousie Wilson, it has since appeared on over 25 “Best of 2006” lists, including #1 Show of the Year (Time), Best Musical of the Year (USA Today, Entertainment Weekly) and Performance of the Year (The New York Times, New York) for Ms. Ebersole.

Based on the legendary 1975 documentary Grey Gardens (by David Maysles, Albert Maysles, Ellen Hovde, Muffie Meyer & Susan Froemke – a Maysles Brothers Films Inc. Production), GREY GARDENS features a book by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife, the film Quills – based on his play), music by Scott Frankel (musical director for Broadway’s Falsettos, Putting It Together) and lyrics by Michael Korie (Harvey Milk). Directed by Tony Award nominee and Obie winner Michael Greif (Rent), the production has musical staging by Tony Award nominee Jeff Calhoun (Big River, Grease!).

GREY GARDENS is produced by East of Doheny, Staunch Entertainment, Randall Wreghitt/Mort Swinsky, Michael Alden and Edwin W. Schloss, in association with Playwrights Horizons.

Not since Mama Rose and Gypsy has there been a mother/daughter act as hilarious, as heartbreaking and as utterly unforgettable as Edith and Edie Beale – Jackie Kennedy’s most outrageous relatives – in Broadway’s acclaimed musical smash GREY GARDENS. From the grandeur of an East Hampton high society party in 1941 to the sensational tabloid headlines that rocked the Kennedy clan in 1973, GREY GARDENS is scandalously entertaining. This witty and passionate ride features Christine Ebersole’s already-legendary performance and breaks new ground as the first musical ever based on a documentary. Step into the world of GREY GARDENS and see the other side of Camelot.

Critics have praised the Broadway production as “An experience no passionate theatergoer should miss” (Ben Brantley, The New York Times), “One of the first must-sees of the season” (Jacques le Sourd, The Journal News), “A brilliantly twisted, bizarrely beautiful, madly entertaining musical” (Michael Sommers, The Star-Ledger), “A funny and poignant riches-to-rags story with a glorious score” (Joe Dziemianowicz, Daily News), “Excellent – a darkly thrilling, quirky and heartbreaking musical” (David Cote, NY1 News) and “An extraordinary and compassionate musical, elegant and grand and high risk” (Lisa Carlin, WCBS News Radio). Praising the show for Rolling Stone, Peter Travers called it, “Hilarious AND heartbreaking. That shot in the arm for theater lovers who’ve longed for something bold, haunting and hypnotic to get lost in. GREY GARDENS is more than a unique and unmissable musical: IT’S A GIFT!”

Critics have unanimously bestowed legendary status on the performance of leading lady Christine Ebersole (who actually gives two performances in the musical: as Edith Beale in Act One and her daughter ‘Little’ Edie in Act Two). Ben Brantley of The New York Times called it, “Possibly the greatest performance I’ve ever seen in a musical,” and “The best argument I can think of for the survival of the American musical. This is what people go to the theater for!” Ms. Ebersole swept the 2006 Spring Theater awards, winning a Drama Desk Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, an Obie, a special citation from the New York Drama Critics Circle and the Drama League’s 2006 Distinguished Performance of the Year Award.

Joining Ms. Ebersole and Ms. Wilson in the Broadway production are five-time Tony Award nominee John McMartin (Follies, Show Boat, Into the Woods) as both ‘Major’ Bouvier and Norman Vincent Peale; Matt Cavenaugh (Urban Cowboy, national tour of Thoroughly Modern Millie, “One Life to Live”) as both Joe Kennedy, Jr. and Jerry; Erin Davie as Young ‘Little’ Edie Beale (the national tours of Swing! and The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber); Kelsey Fowler as Lee Bouvier (in her Broadway debut); Sarah Hyland (title role in Paper Mill’s Annie) as Jacqueline Bouvier; Obie Award winner Michael Potts (Lennon) as Brooks Sr. and Brooks Jr.; and two-time Tony Award nominee Bob Stillman (Dirty Blonde, Grand Hotel) as Gould.

The Broadway production of GREY GARDENS reunites the original creative and design team, featuring scenic design by Allen Moyer, costume design by five-time Tony Award winner William Ivey Long, lighting design by Tony Award winner Peter Kaczorowski, sound design by Brian Ronan, projections by Wendall K. Harrington and hair and wig design by Paul Huntley. Orchestrations are by Tony Award winner Bruce Coughlin and Music Director is Lawrence Yurman.

Since the documentary’s premiere at the New York Film Festival in 1975 and its initial theatrical release in 1976, Grey Gardens and The Beales have achieved iconic status in American popular culture. The real ‘Little’ Edie (1917-2002) influenced a generation of fashion designers – including Isaac Mizrahi, Todd Oldham, John Bartlett and Calvin Klein – with her extraordinary, singular style and fierce individuality. Through the years, major magazines from Vogue and Elle to Harper’s Bazaar and Entertainment Weekly have cited Edie as a trend-setter, and references to Grey Gardens have popped up on “Will & Grace” and “The L Word” and in the music of Rufus Wainwright.

The musical GREY GARDENS is part of a resurgent interest in the Grey Gardens phenomenon. The musical was the first project celebrating the 30th anniversary of the film, and was followed by the Maysles Brothers recently-released companion movie The Beales of Grey Gardens (featuring previously-unseen outtakes from the original documentary, now playing at art houses across the country and recently released on DVD as part of The Criterion Collection), plus several upcoming books (including a collection of Edie’s original writings) and a future Hollywood feature based on the documentary.

GREY GARDENS had its world premiere Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons last Spring. It completely sold out its entire initial limited engagement before it even opened, and went on to sell out an additional three extensions, becoming one of the theater company’s most successful productions.

The Original Broadway Cast Recording of GREY GARDENS, produced by multiple Grammy Award winner Steven Epstein (The Light in the Piazza), was recently released on PS Classics.

Tickets are available by going online to www.telecharge.com, calling (212) 239-6200 or visiting The Walter Kerr Theatre box office (219 West 48th Street). Balcony seats are only available in person at the box office.

My Friend, The Cat!

THE STOREFRONT

is pleased to present

MY FRIEND, The Cat

we don’t chose our pets, they choose us…

by Phil Geoffrey Bond

Featuring
Lisa Asher, Brandon Cutrell, Julie Reyburn
& Alysha Umphress

with musical direction by Ray Fellman

Fridays, May 11 & 25 @ 8pm
The Laurie Beechman Theatre

NEW YORK – The Storefront is pleased to announce a return engagement of My Friend, The Cat, Phil Geoffrey Bond’s tale of the blessings we receive from the four-legged friends who grace our lives. Two special performances will take place at 8pm on Fridays, May 11th and 25th at The Laurie Beechman Theatre, located at 407 West 42nd Street in the heart of New York’s theatre district. There is an $18 cover charge ($15 for members of MAC & Cabaret Hotline) as well as a $15 food/beverage minimum. There is also a dinner/show package available for $60 (please indicate when making a reservation). For reservations, which are recommended, please call 212 695 6909 between the hours of 12pm and 6pm.

My Friend, The Cat traces the ten year relationship between a gay man and his cat, and the history they share together. From chasing cockroaches in their first apartment, “a crappy East Village monstrosity with sloping floors,” where, during hot summers, Bond would place the feline in the refrigerator to cool off, to wintertime roadtrips where he learned that cats can indeed drive a station wagon, Bond’s story unfolds year by year.

A hybrid between cabaret and traditional theatre, the piece includes music by composers as diverse as Laura Nyro, Charlie Chaplin, John Bucchino and even Andrew Lloyd Webber (guess which musical) featuring celebrated vocalists Lisa Asher, Brandon Cutrell, Julie Reyburn and Alysha Umphress.

Phil Geoffrey Bond is the author of The Citadel (Sundance Theatre Lab, Expanded Arts), Sheridan Square and My Queer Youth (The Duplex Cabaret Theatre), Uncommen Threads and The Death of Innocence (Playwrights Horizons workshops, 1994 & 95), among others. He is the recipient of five MAC (Manhattan Association of Clubs and Cabarets) awards, the Backstage Bistro Award for Directing, as well as the prestigious Nightlife Award for his critically-acclaimed series, New Mondays, which debuts music from composers both aspiring and legendary. His directing credits include Avenue Q Swings, Women on the Stage and New Mondays in Concert (all at The Lucille Lortel Theatre), as well as many cabaret performances and concerts at venues ranging from Feinstein’s at the Regency to BB King. He is a 1997 graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, holding dual degrees in Acting and Dramatic Writing. In 1993, he was awarded the Presidential Medallion from President Clinton in recognition of his outstanding work as a playwright.

Interview With Euan Morton.

Interview by Corine Cohen

Euan Morton, a native of Scotland, received an Olivier Award nomination for originating the role of Boy George in the musical Taboo. He moved to New York in 2003 to reprise the role on Broadway, earning Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Award nominations, as well as the Theatre World Award (for Outstanding Broadway Debut). He recently earned a 2006 Obie Award for his appearance in Measure For Pleasure at the Public Theatre. His other stage appearances include title roles in: Tony Kushner's adaptation of Brundibár at the New Victory Theatre and Berkeley Rep; The Who's Tommy at the Bay Street Theatre; and Caligula for the inaugural season of the New York Musical Theatre Festival (2004 NYMF Award for Outstanding Individual Performance). Off-Broadway, Euan recently appeared opposite Alfred Molina in Howard Katz at the Roundabout Theatre.

Euan has recently released his debut solo CD, NewClear, and has appeared in concert in New York City at Town Hall, The Zipper, Joe's Pub and Birdland, as well as at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA. (www.euanmorton.com)

Corine Cohen: Euan, you have millions of teenage fans. What will you be doing next?

Euan Morton: I'll be finishing my series of gigs at New York's Metropolitan Room, then I'm off on tour with a brand new rock gig. My hot new band and I will be visiting Virginia, DC, Austria! I'll be stopping off at The Zipper Factory in New York on June 11th to play one night there too. It'll be a chance for my fans to see the show we're taking to Europe. Then in early July I will be taking the show to the high seas, performing on Rosie & Kelli's R Family Cruise!

Corine Cohen: Will catch the show at the Zipper! What was the most exciting project you have ever worked on? Was it "TABOO" and why?

Euan Morton: I've always been very lucky in that I get to do lots of different kinds of work and play loads of great roles. There are two projects that spring to mind though...recording and promoting NewClear was such a blast and I met loads of great people on my 'album travels' and I loved working on "Measure for Pleasure" at the Public Theatre. That show was excellent fun and the cast were amazing. I'm still hoping we will get to take it to Britain!

Corine Cohen: With the upcoming release of "Show Business" (The Film first shown at the Tribeca Film Festival) how do you feel about being part of the film in "TABOO"?

Euan Morton: Dori Bernstein (Showbusiness Director and Producer) got unprecedented access to many shows and seeing "TABOO" and myself as part of that is wonderful to me. Of course it can be hard to watch as it was such a strange and intense time in my life but I am glad she chose to let me be such an integral part of her movie. I don't love watching myself on screen though...and it is worse to see myself crying!

Corine Cohen:That must have been difficult! What was your favorite part?

Euan Morton: I think there are just too many fun and exciting roles to choose from but I will say that I loved singing the score to "Tommy" and playing that role up at the wonderful Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor last summer. That was a beautiful place, a great theatre and what a great bunch of songs to sing...

Corine Cohen: I love the score of "Tommy" Sorry I missed that! Who do you admire most and why?

Euan Morton: Anyone who leads a life that aims to make a positive difference in our world. I hope that I have been able to use my art to do this and there are countless examples of others doing the same.

Corine Cohen: I wish more people were like you! What music do you listen to at home?

Euan Morton: I'm pretty eclectic and listen to loads of music all the time! On my IPod right now are Keane, Joni Mitchell and Karl Jenkins Mass for Peace.

Corine Cohen: What is your favorite restaurant in NYC or beyond?

Euan Morton: I would say The Tavern @ The Zipper Factory (336 west 37th Street)...I love that place, the food is great, the staff are cool and it's a very hip New York venue. I also love 44th and 10th...for a fancier night out!

Corine Cohen: What are five things that people don't know about you?

Euan Morton: Well if people don't know them then they are private!!!!!!!

Thanks, Euan. Catch Euan on his tour or at the Zipper on July 11th. Hope to see him back on Broadway soon!

Bruce Vilanch- Bring Back His One Man Show!

Bruce Vilanch
A few years ago, I had the great fortune of attending Westbeth Theater to see Bruce Vilanch for the very first time. An ex boyfriend took me to see Bruce Vilanch. Who is that? You're going to love him, trust me, said my ex. I have never laughed harder and to this day, Bruce Vilanch is one of the funniest men around.

He did not disappoint in Broadway by the year. Hope to see Bruce Vilanch on Broadway where he belongs!

NEW YORK DRAMA CRITICS’ CIRCLE NAMES

THE COAST OF UTOPIA

BEST PLAY OF 2006-07

SPRING AWAKENING SELECTED

BEST MUSICAL

RADIO GOLF

NAMED BEST AMERICAN PLAY

POSTHUMOUS AWARD TO AUGUST WILSON

BECOMING CIRCLE’S MOST AWARDED PLAYWRIGHT

New York – Monday, May 7 – The Coast of Utopia, by Tom Stoppard, today won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award (NYDCC) for Best Play of the 2006-2007 season. The Best Musical award was given to Spring Awakening (book and lyrics by Steven Sater, music by Duncan Sheik). The award for Best American Play went to Radio Golf by August Wilson. The selections were made at the 72nd annual voting meeting of the organization today at the offices of Time Out New York in Manhattan.

A special citation was awarded by the NYDCC to the current Broadway revival of Journey’s End, written by R. C. Sherriff and directed by David Grindley.

The awards will be presented at a cocktail reception to be held on Monday, May 14, at the Algonquin Hotel, where the NYDCC was founded in 1935 by such legendary critics as Brooks Atkinson, Walter Winchell and Robert Benchley.

The award for best play carries with it a cash prize of $2,500. Also, a cash award of $1,000 will go to the playwright who receives the award for best American or foreign play. The awards are made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation.

The Coast of Utopia, written by Tom Stoppard and directed by Jack O'Brien, had its world premiere at London's Royal National Theatre in summer 2002. Its three parts had their Broadway premieres at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center Theater as follows: part one, Voyage, opened November 27, 2006; part two, Shipwreck, opened December 21, 2006; part three, Salvage, opened February 18, 2007. This award marks Mr. Stoppard’s sixth NYDCC award for Best Play.

Spring Awakening, music by Duncan Sheik, book and lyrics by Steven Sater, direction by Michael Mayer had its world premiere at the Atlantic Theater Company June 15, 2006 and its Broadway premiere at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre December 10, 2006.

Radio Golf, written by August Wilson and directed by Kenny Leon, had its world premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre in April 2005. Its Broadway premiere will be May 8 at the Cort Theatre. This is August Wilson’s eighth award from the NYDCC, becoming the most-awarded playwright in the award’s history. It is the organization’s first posthumous award since its 1996 Best Musical Award to Jonathan Larson for Rent.

Journey’s End, written by R. C. Sherriff and directed by David Grindley, opened at the Belasco Theatre February 22, 2007. The play had its world premiere in London in 1928 and its American premiere on Broadway in 1929.

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle comprises 21 drama critics from daily newspapers, magazines, and wire services based in the New York metropolitan area. The New York Drama Critics' Circle Award is the nation's second-oldest theatre award, after the Pulitzer Prize for drama; it has been awarded every year since 1936 to the best new play of the season (with additional awards for musicals and foreign or American plays as well as citations for special achievement).

The new NYDCC website, dramacritics.org—which features a year-by-year history of the group's awards and membership, along with a history of the organization, biographies of current members and other information—will go live today in conjunction with the announcement.

Adam Feldman, theatre critic for Time Out New York, has served as president of the NYDCC since 2005. Frank Scheck of the New York Post serves as vice president; Michael Kuchwara of the Associated Press is treasurer.

In addition to Messrs. Congratulations, Capathia!

EMERGING ARTISTS THEATRE CONGRATULATES CAPATHIA JENKINS ON HER DRAMA DESK NOMINATION

New York, NY [April 26, 2007]: Emerging Artists Theatre (EAT) is honored that Capathia Jenkins is being recognized for her work in their production of (mis)UNDERSTANDING MAMMY: The Hattie McDaniel Story. Paul Adams, Artistic Director of EAT, stated, “Capathia put her heart and sole into the role, her performance was outstanding. We are very proud of her accomplishments.”

CAPATHIA JENKINS made her dramatic debut portraying Hattie McDaniel. After receiving rave reviews for her performance in the Broadway hit Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me, Broadway World said the “star-in-the-making” portrayal of Ms. McDaniel was “intense and passionate.” Jenkins reflected on this phenomenal opportunity: “I am honored, humbled and thrilled to be playing Hattie McDaniel. This project is definitely a highlight of my career, to portray the first black woman to win an Oscar for Gone With The Wind and that’s just one aspect of this extraordinary woman’s life. The chance to do a challenging dramatic piece at Emerging Artists Theatre where they nurture new works is an actor’s dream.” www.capathiajenkins.com

(mis)UNDERSTANDING MAMMY: The Hattie McDaniel Story is a play with music by Joan Ross Sorkin, which reveals a side of Hattie McDaniel’s life that few people knew. Hattie achieved stardom by becoming the first African-American to win an Academy Award, but she paid a high price for fame. By playing a succession of maids and cooks, most notably Mammy in Gone With the Wind, she became the target of an unrelenting campaign against “Mammyism” led by Walter White of the NAACP, who thought her roles were shameful and degrading to their race. Despite her own efforts to bring dignity and humanity to her roles, within seven years of winning her Oscar, her film career was virtually destroyed.

Incorporated in October 1993, Emerging Artists Theatre's mission is to provide a dynamic home for playwrights to remain the key component in developing their work from an idea to a fully realized production. EAT provides the opportunity to emerging directors, actors and designers to participate with a live playwright on developing their original work. In its 14th season, in addition to the Triple Threat Premieres, EAT’s Fall and Spring Eatfests gave audiences a taste of 23 new short plays! EAT’s Developmental Series gave 224 artists a chance to workshop their creativity featuring one woman shows, clown work, standup, sketch-comedy, cabaret and ensemble musicals. www.eatheatre.org

The Drama Desk was founded in 1949 to explore key issues in the theater and to bring critics and writers together in an organization to support the ongoing development of theater in New York. The organization began presenting its awards in 1955, and is the only critics’ organization to honor achievement in the theater with competition between Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions.
